(Article ID: 222 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951): Arnold Schoenberg was Austrian.

IN GENERAL
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951): Schoenberg began as a post-romantic composer with "difficult" chromatic writing lying very near to atonality. Progressively, Schoenberg devised a fresh new way of composition by using his "twelve-tone" method, in which the composer is called to use continuously in an identical way (even if he finally uses certain transformations of the row) the very particular series of the 12 tones of the chromatic scale that has initially been selected for the particular work. This method had really enormous influence over the later growth of modern music.

STYLE
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951): Even though twelve-tone method was used for the actual order of the tonal heights in a composition, this was not the case for the other parameters of the sound. Thus, the forms that Schoenberg used were all the old classic forms with few changes. Nevertheless, the twelve-tone system gave really grand possibilities for achievement of artistic results by using the series of the chromatic scale as further way of development during each piece. Paradoxical is the fact, that, in the end of his life, Schoenberg tried again to compose in the old, more classical way.

WORKS
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951): Schoenberg's work is very important concerning the application of his new method of composition that Schoenberg devised himself (twelve-tone system) : Operas : Expectation, The Lucky Hand, From Today Till Tomorrow, Moses and Aaron. Vocal music : Chorales, Lieds (songs) with orchestra, 42 lieds with piano, The Lunar Pierrot etc. Instrumental Music : Pelleas and Melisande, 2 chamber symphonies, Variations, concert for violin, concert for piano. Chamber Music : 4 string quartets, "Transfigured Night", serenade opus 24, pieces for piano, transcriptions of works by Bach, Handel, Brahms etc. Theoretical writings : Handbook of Harmony etc.
