Bela Bartok (1881-1945)
(Article ID: 212 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Bela Bartok (1881-1945): Bela Bartok was Hungarian.

IN GENERAL
Bela Bartok (1881-1945): Bartok is perhaps the largest national composer that has ever existed and one of the most important composers that used tonal forms and the popular and traditional material in full contrast with modern techniques of composition as twelve-tone system and its parallel streams like the "Neoclassicism". Bartok studied in-depth the popular music of his homeland, Hungary, but he also studied the popular music of the neighbouring populations of Eastern Europe, in an as much as possible more "genuine" form. Bartok was also interested, apart from the traditional music per se, in the social-cultural processes that had led to its creation. By studying in-depth and by using along with this traditional musical material also various modern ideas and also classic forms of process for his material, Bartok finally created music works with characteristic profile and hearing.

STYLE
Bela Bartok (1881-1945): The effort for the use of the folk motifs in genuine form did not deter the artistic treatment of rhythmical elements - in a way perhaps more complex than that of western music - and of the harmonic elements that reveal important influence of an extended range of western composers (an example being Debussy). A big part of Bartok's music is by its nature "heterophonic", that is to say simultaneous appearance of melody in a lot of similar or unsimilar forms that also presents analogous rhythmical and harmonic elements. Generally speaking, Bartok's style has profited enough by innovations of other composers that were absorbed in his music, without, however, to lose by any means the "traditional spirit" that Bartok's music contains.

WORKS
Bela Bartok (1881-1945): Large enough and important is Bartok's work - Theatre : An opera (Duke Bluebeard's Castle), 2 ballets (The Wooden Prince and The Miraculous Mandarin). Vocal music : Secular cantata, a lot of transcriptions of various popular songs and melodies. Orchestral music : 2 suites, divertimento, 5 concerts for various instruments (concert for two pianos and percussion, concert for violins, concert for orchestra etc.). Piano music : Bagatelles, 8 Romanian dances, Allegro barbaro, Sonata, Suite, "Mikrokosmos". Chamber music : 6 string quartets, "Contrasts" for violin, clarinet and piano, 44 duos for 2 violins, 2 sonatas for violin and piano.
