(Article ID: 205 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): Edvard Grieg was Norwegian.

IN GENERAL
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): Grieg is considered the biggest composer of Norway and - despite his initial difficulties to be established as a composer with mature romantic idiom - Grieg's work was propagated widely as long as he lived and he eventually gained enough popularity. Grieg occasionally lived far from his homeland and he made many travels, but, generally, Grieg also collaborated a lot with men of letters, so that big part of his work is written with source of inspiration - but not only - theatrical works and poems. Grieg cooperated with many other artists as well and his own work aimed at the prominence of the popular music of his homeland.

STYLE
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): Grieg's style is lyric and is generally oriented to small forms (pieces of relatively small duration). After years had passed, Grieg shaped a very personal and mature style of composition - one that for his epoch was quite advanced - and that was also rich in ideas, themes and sentiments. Grieg's large output in songs is also owed to the fact that his woman was a singer, but, also mainly to his wish to support the popular music of his homeland. Grieg's particular style stood as a source of inspiration for several later composers - specifically for the impressionists.

WORKS
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): Grieg's output is mainly oriented to the music for piano and the songs : Stage music for the "Peer Gynt" of Ibsen, a concert for piano, symphonic dances, a lot of various pieces for piano, three sonatas for violin and piano, a sonata for cello and piano, a lot of melodies and songs.
