(Article ID: 219 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963): Francis Poulenc was French.

IN GENERAL
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963): Poulenc is one of the most characteristic personalities of the team of the six ("Les Six") that they expressed for years the tendency of Neoclassicism in France (along with Milhaud, Honegger and three other composers). Poulenc had substantially been self-taught as a composer. The most artistically important part of Poulenc's production are his songs, which contain a lyricism that continues a precious and brilliant heritage.

STYLE
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963): Poulenc's style is genuinely French. In Poulenc's works, we can find mixed elements from musical "cafes", jazz music, music of cinema and music of classic tradition, all in an ironic and sarcastic way. In any case, even in Poulenc's most crazy pieces of parody we can find traces of the lyric talent of the composer, which is also diffused in his songs, that are Poulenc's most attractive and successful works.

WORKS
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963): In Poulenc's work we can distinguish his lyric songs - Dialogues des Carmelites (opera), Les Mamelles de Tiresias (opera buff (comical)), La voix humaine (monodrama (with one act)), 4 ballets (Les Biches, Model Animals), Le Bal Masque (secular cantata), choral works "a capella" (chorus only), music for the theatre and the cinema, concerts for piano and pipe organ, morning serenade for piano and 18 instruments, more than 100 melodies and songs.
