NATIONALITY
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): Gustav Mahler was Austrian.

IN GENERAL
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): Mahler is one of the most important mature-romantic composers of music history, who initially had limited success in his era - his symphonic works focused the curiosity rather than they were liked - and he was well-known as an excellent orchestra conductor. Nevertheless, in his spare time, Mahler composed with passion and consequence. Mahler's work is nowadays considered very important and to a large extent prototype and source of admiration, but is also object of deep study. Let us also say that great conductor Dimitris Mitropoulos is significantly responsible for the acceptance and recognition of the symphonic works of Mahler in the New World, since he believed so much in the strength of Mahler's musical creation.

STYLE
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): The bigger part of Mahler's work is about symphonic and vocal music (songs). Mahler's style is clearly "post-romantic", that is to say pure reference of passion, sentiment and greatness, with instances mostly lyric or heroic, but with a technique and a total orchestral sound that approaches seriously the modern idiom of the twentieth century. Mahler used to occasionally reach near the threshold of atonality, a crossing that eventually did not attempt. Mahler's music has an extraordinary intense mobility, with frequent change of phrases and atmosphere, that often leads to a grandiose orchestral outbreak that easily impresses, but, finally is "covered" by the next active melodic movement. The truth is that Mahler has a style that is rather unique and requires enough effort for the ear of the "easy" listener to process it. In any case, it deserves the effort for him to try !

WORKS
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): In Mahler's output, the emphasis is laid mainly on the symphonic and vocal music : 9 symphonies and important preliminary drafts of the tenth, "The Song of the Earth" for contralto, tenor and orchestra, various circles of songs with escort of orchestra, 5 lieds (songs), "Songs for Dead Children".
