Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)
(Article ID: 185 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869): Hector Berlioz was French.

IN GENERAL
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869): Berlioz is considered one of the first composers that systematically wrote "descriptive music" (that is to say music that we consider that it mainly tries to describe pictures of reality, usually in a rather poetic way). The performances of Berlioz's works sometimes roused enthusiasm and sometimes caused indifference. After enough ambitious efforts - and several personal adventures - Berlioz achieved to meet with success in a rather mature age. Berlioz's writings are also quite remarkable.

STYLE
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869): Generally speaking, Berlioz's style is dynamic but also sensitive, especially suitable for symphonic music - occasionally with inspired instrumentations - and full passion. Moreover, Berlioz was the first composer to use the idea of leitmotiv, that is the "directional theme", the musical idea that is repeated in vital points and lends unity to the whole work. Later, this idea was further developed by Wagner in his own work.

WORKS
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869): Berlioz's output is of mainly orchestral content : Symphonic Music - Fantastic Symphony, "Romeo and Juliet", "Harold in Italy", Symphony funereal and triumphal, various overtures. Opera as a concert - "Return to Life", "The Damnation of Faust" etc. Opera - "Benvenuto Cellini", "The Trojans", "Beatrice and Benedict" etc. Religious music - Large Mass of Death, Requiem, "Te Deum" for 3 choruses, pipe organ and orchestra etc. Remarkable are also Berlioz's theoretical and literary works (Study on the modern instrumentation and orchestration etc.).
