(Article ID: 233 - republished on Sun 26/01/2020 from artissimo.gr)

NATIONALITY
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001): Iannis Xenakis was Greek.

IN GENERAL
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001): The basic idea behind the music of Iannis Xenakis is the transformation of various mathematical relations, which are in essence expressing the whole universe, into music sounds, and Xenakis uses a certain group of methods for this purpose. Xenakis usually enjoys the aid of computer devices which help him in various computational ways with the construction of the composition, even if finally Xenakis himself has the overall choice of the material.

STYLE
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001): The music that is deriving from the result of transformations of mathematical relations and all its relevant methods, and that is not based on performers that are reading the "classical music score", this music is usually named Stochastic Music. The mathematical relations that are used for this purpose have usually close relationships to theories of probabilities as well as to theories of statistics. The final result is a composition with fairly live content, written with post-modern technique, that can easily change our idea for the possible directions of music in the future.

WORKS
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001): Xenakis's work is relatively cohesive with characteristic names for each piece of music : Pithoprakta, Achorripsis, Herma, Syrmos, Akrata, Nomos Alpha, Oresteia, Persephassa, Polytope, Metastaseis, Nights, Eonta.
